As those friends I see in IRC or some other chat might have surmised, my computer is dead. Took it in to the repair shop yesterday, and the verdict is: kaput. Mainboard dead.

This is, as one might surmise, rather annoying.

So, I'm looking at paying the cost of a new computer to fix it, or, well, getting a new computer. Dangit, I should've gotten applecare - I decide not to /one time/, and this happens...

Sigh. Was hoping for a cheerier return to posting, honestly.

Hiss. Heresy.

Seriously, I've been using Macs since the late 80s.

Not 90s. 80s.

So have a lot of people, but do you have any reason to use one other than brand loyalty? I honestly don't understand the allure when you end up complaining about incompatibility issues with games and so on. Do you use your Mac for anything that only Macs can specifically do? The only advantage I'm really aware of is that they're handy for art, and even then I'm ignorant of the specifics of why they're better.

A PC would probably be a bit easier on your budget, too.

Well...I've not had good experiences with Windows, to be honest. If I were to get a PC, I'd probably wind up running Linux. So, all my Mac-compatibility gripes would neatly shift into Linux-compatibility gripes.

Still doable, I suppose, but something I'm putting into my 'plan B' column.

Besides, not like I need that many games to play anyway. I'm happy with the 10-year old stuff. (Although I note that any new machine /would/ run Spore. Just saying.)

So beyond the brand loyalty, that's part of the reason I'm inclined to stay Mac. I don't currently use any of the Mac-specific options - but I like having them there. And...yeah. I think I lost track of my conversation thread here.

Hope everything works out for you, Whacker of Gulls. My personal opinion is that if you're gonna spend enough to get a new computer, you might as well get a new computer.

Yeah, planning on it. Besides, the case is dented, the CD drive's been iffy, the battery life...

...well, I may not have been treating it well. Hmm.

How much you want to bet that if you did get the extended warranty then you're laptop would have lived for 10 years.

I'll call you later. *hugs*

Ow, condolences on your loss. Any chance there's a used/refurbished CPU dealer or outlet as an interim solution?

Well, I've got a replacement machine now. Smaller screen, but scarily enough the specs are the same. Working on transferring stuff over now...
