Nethack Geekery!
Nov. 3rd, 2008 03:18 amRight. Go ahead and skip this, if you're not interested.
So. Every year, in November, the dev/null network holds a NetHack tournament. This is done with a single player game by having various goals as the target.
Personally, I'm pretty certain I have no hope of winning. But hey, it's still fun. When not frustrating.
Beyond the normal game, there's a bunch of challenges. Four this year - I've found three, and completed two of them. The first was simple enough - a few tasks in Kingdom of Loathing, to unlock use of Elbereth. (For people not playing the game or relatively confused, Elbereth is a name from Tolkien - written down, it will scare almost any monster. Almost.)
The second just gave a bit of a Zork invasion. Normally, NetHack has dark rooms. You can't see what's going on. Troublesome, but not too dangerous. But with this challenge...
"It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a Grue."
I'm not sure how many tries it took me to find that bloody device, but I finally shut it down. Challenge 2, complete. Next up: PacMan. I am not making this up.
